Building IndustryCommunity Spirit Awards
Honoring projects and communities that serve a social need.
Community Statement:
In June of 2009 the Dougy Center suffered the loss of its primary program and administration building, a historic home in a Portland
neighborhood, to an arson fire. The remnants of the building were subsequently deconstructed and a new 14,800 square foot facility was built.
The new facility provides a safe harbor for individuals at their most vulnerable, allowing counselors to provide support in a comfortable and warm environment. The
traditional architecture of the facility evokes the quintessential sense of hearth and home, while blending seamlessly into the existing residential neighborhood. That sense
of familiarity and comfort is a theme that runs throughout the building. The Center even features a living/gathering space with adjacent kitchen for a home-like feeling.
Therapy spaces are also provided for children, teens, young adults and adults. Each age group’s space is designed for their unique needs. The children’s area has
a central circular talking room for group discussions and is surrounded by a variety of spaces for activities including art, volcano room, music, role playing, theater,
games, small motor skills area and an outdoor play area. The teens, young adults and adults each have designated space with a central talking room and activity spaces
